The Boston Bandits (7-5) traveled up to Portland, Maine and came away with a 35-34 come from behind win over the So. Maine Raging Bulls (7-3) in the regular season finale. The Bulls were set up at mid-field when the Bandits failed to convert on a fourth and one at midfield on their initial possession. RB Marvin Langley made the Bandits pay with the first of his three touchdowns on the day, when he scampered in from 5 yards out. The Bulls up their lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter when Jeremy Tardiff scored on a fourth down run from the 2 yard line. The Bulls were set up again inside of the Bandits’ 5 yard line minutes later when a muffed punt snap at midfield winded up being batted all the way into the Bandit red-zone. The Bulls upped their lead when Langley scored again and Steve Goodrich’s PAT put the game at 21-0. The Bandits got a good kick-off return to midfield and Clarzell Pearl found a streaking Daryl Hodge across the middle for a 52 yard touchdown catch and run. Olanzo Butler’s PAT cut the deficit to 21-7. The Bandit defense stripped the Bulls of the ball quickly in their next possession at the Bull 35 yard line and promptly took advantage as Pearl found Butler over the middle as he ran over some of the Bull secondary en route to an 18 yard touchdown strike. The PAT failed leaving the score at 21-13. The Bandits defense once again stripped the Bull runner of the ball and Pearl reconnected with Butler for their second touchdown combination. Pearl went back to Butler who made a dive catch (and injured himself in the process) for the two point conversion and a tie game at 21-21, seconds before the half. The Bulls took their first possession of the second half the length of the field for a 28-21 lead, but the Bandits answered when Pearl connected with Hodge for a 9 yard score. Faced with injuries and missing personnel, the Bandits had to attempt a 2 point conversion which failed, leaving them trailing 28-27. The Bulls scored in the fourth quarter when Phil Warren dove in from 1 yard out, however, the PAT failed leaving the window open for the Bandits at 34-27. The Bandits took advantage, driving the length of the field and got on the board when JD Brooks scored from 12 yards out on Pearl's fifth TD pass of the day. Going for the two point conversion and the win, Pearl pushed his way through to the end zone for a 35-34 lead with 3 minutes to go in the game. The Bandit defense held the Bulls’ last attempt and where able to secure the win on the road by getting one last first down then taking a knee to end the game. The victory also secured the Bandits their 12th consecutive season at .500 or better (they had already secured their 12th consecutive play-off appearance a couple of weeks prior). The Bandits next play the New England Hawks in the first round of the NEFL Colonial Conference playoffs on Saturday, Oct. 13th at the Hawks (location to be determined). |
