Bandits Defeat Oilers in 2008 Debut
Monday, 16 June 2008

The Boston Bandits opened their 2008 season with an impressive 50-14 victory at the Randolph Oilers of the Eastern Football League. The Bandit held Randolph on their first drive despite extending the Oilers’ possession with a roughing the punter call. Once the Bandits got the ball, however, there was no looking back. JD Brooks and John McElrath ran the entire length of the initial 70 yard drive for a lead the Bandits would never relinquish. Brooks would score on a 9 yard run. The extra point was blocked but holder Jay Blot scooped up the ball and dove in for a 2pt conversion and an 8-0 advantage. The Bandits would up the margin when Clarzell Pearl connected with Omar Phillip down the sideline for a 29 yard touchdown streak. Bandit newcomer Ryan DeCamp connected on the first of six PATs on the day (a Bandit record) and a 15-0 lead. Alvin Edwards interception ended an Oiler drive. The Bandits would quickly up the score to 22-0 when Pearl found a wide open Jay Blot who would take the ball 85 yards for the touchdown, with a helpful block by Sydney Jean-Felix. The Oilers would benefit from Bandit penalties getting on the scoreboard when QB Ryan Myers found an open receiver for a touchdown on fourth down. The Bandits would come right back when Pearl threw a short pass to Daryl Hodge who made a few moves and was off to the end zone for a 43 yard catch and run, placing the score at 29-7 at the half. The Bandits quickly picked up where they left off in two plays as Pearl and Hodge repeated their connection, this time for a 45 yard touchdown combination. The Oilers answered using some no huddle offense to work their way down the field in position for Myers’ second touchdown pass from the 8 yard line, cutting the lead to 36-14. Bandit rookie QB Max Rosenthal kept up the pace culminating a 70 yard drive by connecting with fellow rookie Ty Brooks on a 9 yard strike. The Oilers would see a drive end on the Bandit 10 yard line thanks in part to a big hit by Leighton Lormeus on a receiver crossing the middle of the end zone. Another Bandit rookie, Rashad Richardson, would leave a trail of Oilers in his wake as he took a toss down the right sideline for a 90 yard touchdown scamper and a 50-14 lead. The Bandits would recover the kick-off and were poised to score again as time expired. The Bandits opener their NEFL season on July 19th at the Worcester Wildcats at 6:30PM.
