Bandits 24, Colonials 0: No watering down Bandits. The MetroWest Daily News MARLBOROUGH — If the Boston Bandits (6-0) are to be stopped from going undefeated, it will take more than rain — and perhaps snow and sleet — to deny them.
In the midst of a 24-0 victory over the Metrowest Colonials (2-4) on Saturday night at Kelleher Field, the only thing that seemed to minimize the Bandits' high-profile offense and tenacious defense was the sprinklers suddenly turning on midway through the third quarter.
"They’re just an amazing team," coach Keith Noonan said when asked how to slow the Bandits. "They just have talent all around. There’s a reason why now they’re 6-0. They deserve it. They played hard. They’re a class organization. They hit hard. They’re favored to win it all for a reason and you see why."
The Bandits broke through early in the second quarter when fullback Chavin Fagan took his only carry over the right tackle for a 6-0 lead (missed extra point). The two-yard rumble highlighted a seven-play, 83-yard drive. Running back John McElrath accounted for 33 yards on the ground, while wideouts Dave Racca (36 yards) and Omar Phillips (14 yards) each hauled in a reception.
After the Colonials failed to convert a fourth-and-two from the Boston 47-yard line, Bandits quarterback Shane Cheltenham led the team on a six-play drive that culminated with his sneaking one-yarder over the center for six points. The Colonials alertly snuffed out the two-point conversion and the deficit stood at 12-0.
On their opening possession of the third quarter, the Bandits marched 72 yards by going exclusively to the ground. Running backs McElrath and Jadiem Brooks accounted for 40 yards while Cheltenham gained the remaining 32 yards, including a 12-yard scamper to his left in which he stretched out to knock down the pylon for the touchdown. The two-point conversion failed and the score was 18-0.
The Colonials refused to go quietly. Although noticeably smaller than the Bandits, they battled through each snap. Their efforts were rewarded when linebacker Tyrelle Robinson, dropping into coverage over the middle, intercepted a Cheltenham pass with 14:45 remaining in the fourth quarter and returned it to the Bandits 40-yard line.
"The way we fought was amazing," Noonan said. "Our execution was strong. When we lost the first time (the teams met in Week 1) we had some pretty bad tackling, but this time the tackling was there and the zone discipline was there." For the second time this season, the Bandits were not to be denied against the Colonials. After stopping the Colonials on their fourth-down attempt following their interception, the Bandits drove to the Colonials 18-yard line where Cheltenham connected with wideout Darryl Hodge over the middle for the final six points, pushing the lead to 24-0 (two-point attempt failed). |

The Boston Bandits improved their record to 5-0 by defeating an undermanned Coastal Chief team 50-0 at English HS Saturday. The Bandits opened the scoring in the first quarter when Will Johnson connected with Omar Phillip on a 40 yard pass. Johnson would throw two more touchdown passes in the second quarter, a 46 yard strike to Keith Lessner and a 25 yard completion to Darryl Hodge. The Bandit defense racked up another shut out and also contributed two scores of their own. Chima Andesy scooped up a fumble and charged 45 yards for the score. Gregory Dominique did the same going 33 yards, eluding the last potential tackler with a fierce stiff arm. Shane Cheltenham connected twice with Sydney Jean-Felix for diving 10 and 12 yard touchdowns catches. Jeff Similien had converted the six previous PAT’s but on the final attempt, the snap was too high, so the holder, Jay Blot, took off and out ran the defenders to the corner capping the scoring at 50-0. Before the game, the teams held a moment of silence in memory of Omar Phillip’s sister, Genevieve Marie Phillip, who was killed just days prior to the game. The Bandits next travel to face the Metro-West Colonials (2-3) at Kelleher Field, Marlboro, MA at 7PM. |

After a ceremony to pay tribute to the Armed forces, the Boston Bandits (4-0) started the game off with a bang when Darryl Hodge returned the opening kick-off 85 yards for a touchdown. Jeff Similien added the PAT for a quick 7-0 advantage over the host Whaling City Clippers. The Bandits continued the early assault when JD Brooks scampered in from 10 yards and John McElrath scored from 6 yards both in the first quarter, putting the score at 19-0. The Bandits got good field position for those scores after a near second kick return on a punt by Hodge. QB Will Johnson would continue the ground attack when he darted in from 3 yards out for a 26-0 lead for the Bandits at the half. John McElrath would score a second time on a 9 yard run for the final score 32-0. The Bandit defense continued its impressive start, having only allowed 6 points in 4 games this season. The Bandits return home Saturday August 18th vs the Coastal Chiefs at English HS at 7PM. |
